How to choose an ISP

Net Index by Ookla - Household Download Index for Philippines

Facebook, Google, Yahoo, YouTube - These, I think, are the some of the most common sites visited by our generation, or at least my immediate community. It cannot be denied that socialization is now done not only in the personal level but also and more often done over the web. School researches, assignments, and the like are being sought for in the internet. Entertainment has also been among the reasons why people choose to have an internet connection at home.

I have seen the number of options for internet connection grow as the popularity of the conceived "need" to be connected to the internet rose. Before, people were stuck to the dial-up connection which was connected to the phone lines, rendering the phones useless whenever the line is used to browse the internet. Then came the internet connection option from Cable service providers along with the regular services that they have been providing. What followed was a wireless broadband, wherein a transceiver is set up, usually with a direct line of sight to a specific network's site tower. It was then repackaged and made much smaller. Now USB modems are rampant and favored by people usually on the go.

While these companies, called ISPs (Internet Service Providers) promise quality service in their marketing, the service users' experiences seem more effective in proving a certain company's claims. Among the main concerns of those interested in opting for their own internet connection is speed. And rightly so, because I think that speed is a big factor in the user's satisfaction of the Internet Service he has.

To help you choose the ISP to opt for, do check out Ookla's Net Index and scroll down until you see the ratings for ISPs.
When you open the page, what you would see are the site's rankings of either geographical locations or ISPs. Of course, the higher the index rating, the better (generally speaking). As of the time of writing, Globe Telecoms currently holds the top spot(17.14Mbps - 3.1). Sky Broadband and Philippine Long Distance Telephone follow at spots 2(2.49Mbps - 2.8) and 3(1.88Mbps - 2.4), respectively.
Remember, these results are based on the users themselves.
